For the first time this year and thanks to a half-American family who organised it, we celebrated Halloween the Trick or Treat way. My children are still young so we mums went along with them and knocked at each-others doors. To avoid eating too much sugary stuff, each family had a menu of “spiders” (meat balls with spaghetti legs), “witches fingers” (potato croquettes), “blood” (red orange juice) and so on!
You can imagine how much I like visiting other people houses, so for me the treat was that!
What I found fascinating was the impact that a house has on young children. In most houses the lights were dimmed and the atmosphere was set up to be a bit spooky. The youngest children were scared at first and only after a while understood that it was all set up.
And that made me thought about the great impact light can have on our interiors. With the wrong light, even the best interior can look dull and plain. With the wrong light in a working space, the productivity can go down, the whole space can look depressing and be in contrast with your brand image!
Choosing light can prove to be quite difficult and it involves not only the choice of the lamp itself. It starts much earlier. In the planning phase you have to decide where exactly to put the lamps (on the floor, on the walls – at what height?, on the ceilings, as pendants) and from where they can be switch on and off. To do so you have to imagine the atmospheres that you want to obtain in that room. Often that involve mixing together harmoniously several different types of light. For example, having a pendant light on the dining table for when you are eating and appliques on the wall for a “lumière d’ambiance”. Once you’ve decided where, you have to go back to the choice of the lamps itself and see if they fit in the place in terms of volume and dimension. Then you refine the whole plan from there.
I personally love mixing old and new so I like introducing very geometrical and contemporary lamps in interiors that still have original antique features, like in the pictures below.
