standing renovation

francesca On 17 - May - 2012

This bathroom belongs to a beautiful 1960s villa located in a residential area of Brussels. When I first visited the house with my clients, it was still in good conditions. Only the style and taste were a bit out-dated.

The bathroom had a turquoise mosaique that could be very nice in a contemporary bathroom. However we decided to do a complete renovation that included all the piping, heating, electrical installation and of course new tiling and sanitary ware.

have a quick look at the transformation

My clients wanted the bathroom to look modern and have an overall “cleaner” look. They also wanted a bigger bathtub, a double vanity, a beautiful but easy to clean radiator and wanted to use dark grey and white as colour scheme.

For its shape and constraint, we couldn’t really re-design the layout. We took away the bidet, moved the radiator but kept bath tub and sinks at their original place.

Since the wall of the bathtub measures barely 170 cm we initially studied the possibilities of putting a rounded bathtub. Then, since the room was getting a more geometrical look, I proposed to use the Duravit Paiova, a bathtub that has a trapezium shape and is larger on one side. With this trick, the whole bathtub is slightly inclined and its length increases!

Red was a colour coming up in different areas of the house and we decided to add it to the bathtub. The glossy red tiles from Ceramica Bardelli  bring a touch of fun and colour to the white and grey that would otherwise have a colder look. Note how the height of the bathtub was calculated to have five rows of full tiles! These are all details to be thought in advance and require a very good tiler (my thanks to Andrzej and his team!).

The two sinks were replaced with a vanity with double sinks and a mirror with integrated light.  A curiosity: this mirror warms up to avoid misting up and has an integrated watch!

In between the mirror and the counter top we chose one of my favourite tiles (Melrose of Villeroy & Boch). They are so white and soft that they blend into the wall!

The radiator was moved from below the window to leave the space for putting a small furniture or a bench. It was placed where there once used to be a door.

We chose the Vasco Niva Soft which is another of my favourites. Again, it is smooth and soft to the touch and it almost disappears into the wall. Not only it’s beautiful but it’s also super practical to clean.

Here are some snapshots: the day we took the final pictures we were blessed with a beautiful light. Angela_Case study bathroom

Bathrooms usually need to be renovated. They can either keep the same layout or be changed completely. In both cases the possibilities are endless  and the choice can be overwhelming. If you want to improve your bathroom but don’t know where to start, don’t hesitate to contact me and see if I can help!
